Kershaw Sponsors Local Oregon Bareback Rider, Steven Peebles

Peebles rides in the PRCA (Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association) and the PRS (Professional Rough Stock)

TUALATIN, OREGON—Kershaw Knives is proud to announce its sponsorship of Oregon-native bareback bronc rider Steven Peebles. Peebles has recently been making a name for himself in the professional rodeo circuit with a major rodeo wins at the California Salinas Rodeo, San Antonio Rodeo, and Cody Stampede.

Bareback bronc riding has been a professional rodeo event for more than 100 years. It was developed from the horse-breaking skills required of a working cowboy. Today, it’s a skilled competition that pits the bucking abilities of specially bred horses against the balance and coordination of the bareback rider. Using no saddle or rein, only a leather and rawhide rigging, the rider attempts to stay on the bucking bronc’s back for eight seconds or more.

Peebles has been riding bareback since high school. He is a five-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo  (WNFR) qualifier from 2009-2013 and finished second in the World Standings last season, spurred on by winning both round two and three at the WNFR. He was the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s Bareback Riding Rookie of the Year in 2009 and is currently ranked #2 in the World Standings. Steven was also the PRS World Champion and Finals Champion in 2012 and finished third overall in 2013.

"Sponsoring a bareback rider is a natural for Kershaw," said Susan Dundas, Marketing Manager for Kai USA’s Sporting Division. “Kershaw was born on the Officer Ranch in eastern Oregon, so we know that every rider, every cowboy and cowgirl, and every rodeo fan needs a good knife—which means they need a Kershaw."

Nationwide rodeo events, along with television coverage, social media promotions, and more made this sponsorship attractive to Kershaw. “We're proud to help bring the excitement of this amazing athlete to rodeo fans and families all across the nation," said Dundas. “We also happen to know that Steven likes to spend time hunting and fishing and we’ll be proud to have him using our quality knives in his off hours, too.”

Steven Peebles travels to nearly 100 events each season. He’ll be back home in the great Northwest to defend his Championship title at the Pendleton Roundup from September 10-13 and will also be making stops at the Ellensburg Rodeo August 29th through September 1st and the Washington State Fair in Puyallup September 5th – 7th. Said Peebles of the new sponsorship, “Kershaw makes such a great product; I’m honored to represent their brand. The people there are what really make it special and I hope to do them proud.”
